Camaa Pearl at Behind the Pen NYC

I recently had the incredible opportunity to volunteer at a Black Indie Author book signing event, Behind The Ben by Sistah Girl Book Club, and it was an experience I’ll cherish forever. Not only did I get to support talented authors like Kennedy Ryan, Asia Monique, Briann Danae, Stephanie Nicole Norris, but I also gathered valuable insights that I’m eager to share with you.

Setting Up

From the moment I stepped into the event venue, I could feel the palpable excitement and creative energy in the air. Before the room was open to registrants, I was buzzing with anticipation. Myself and other volunteers help set up the space and when authors started arriving, we helped arrange their tables, There were contemporary, urban, country hood and a lot of diverse romance books on display. I met talents within the Black Indie Author Romance community I had never heard of.

Author Interactions

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering was getting to interact with the authors themselves before registrants entered the venue. I also met other authors who were volunteers and can’t wait to see the magic that would happen with those connections. Now let’s get to the main attraction!

The Importance of Preparation:

As I recorded videos to document the event, I noticed that a few key elements played a crucial role in ensuring a successful book signing event:

  1. Research: Before attending any book signing event, it’s essential to research the authors and their works. This not only helps you appreciate their stories better, but also allows you to engage in meaningful conversations with the authors. I was rushing over my words with some authors and also recommending authors to readers who haven’t read their works before.
  2. Budgeting: This is so tricky! Be mindful of your budget. With so many fantastic books on display, it’s easy to get carried away. I must say I got carried away, my YouTube video says a lot. If you’re a sucker for books, I’ll suggest to delusion yourself in deciding how much you’re willing to spend in advance. 😀
  3. Questions: I didn’t spend time doing this because… well, I was a volunteer. However, I saw and overheard a couple of registrants doing this. Prepare thoughtful questions for the authors. Engaging in discussions about their books, writing processes, and inspirations can lead to enriching interactions.
  4. Respect Boundaries: While authors are eager to connect with their readers, remember to respect their personal space and time. They may have a long line of admirers waiting to meet them.
  5. Support New Authors: Not just new authors, but authors you haven’t heard of before. It goe a long way!

Like I mentioned, I’ve compiled the highlights of my day as a volunteer in a video on my YouTube channel. These videos not only capture the vibrant atmosphere of the event but also offer insights into the world of book signing events. If you’re considering attending one or simply want to know what to expect, check out the video.

In conclusion, volunteering at the Behind the Pen NYC book signing event was an enriching experience that allowed me to connect with amazing writers and fellow book lovers. It reinforced the idea that book signing events are not just about books; they’re about celebrating stories, fostering connections, and supporting authors who pour their hearts into their work. I intend to write an article from an author’s perspective – the benefits of volunteering.

Remember, attending a book signing event can be a delightful adventure, but a little preparation goes a long way in making the most of the experience. I hope my video and insights help you navigate your book signing event with confidence.
