What is something independent authors and authors in general not know comes with the package of publishing?

Book Marketing!

I’ve been marketing my books for three years and counting. Trying to get people to buy them and tell me how much they love them or… not. And everyday I learn or try something new to sell my books. Sometimes they work, most times they don’t! Why? Because marketing involves building a relationship that might lead to sales. It doesn’t assure you of sales, but it might convert, and lead to sales. But one thing is sure, you are building a relationship with a future reader.

It might be tiring when you don’t see results, but I tell you, it’s working… it is working. With every book I release, with marketing endeavour, I’ve grown from being an author with only friends to purchase my books to having readers who I might never meet profess their love for me.

If I can do it, then you can to! Some authors even do this without ever showing their faces, so your identity is safe if you are using a pen name.

Here are some book marketing ideas to last you all throughout the year. The idea is to replicate this list every month and spread it through the year.

  • Days/Anniversaries of Historical Importance (of people, your books, the world)
  • Research related to your book
  • Trending topics related to your books
  • Reviews of your books
  • Review of books you read that are similar to yours
  • Events you plan with an author friend
  • Things you would like to write about
  • New releases
  • Other author’s new releases that are similar to your books
  • Video of you writing (behind the scene)
  • Video of you at a book-related/research related event
  • Quotes from your books
  • What you’ve learnt as an author
  • Pictures of you holding your book
  • Songs that inspired you to write a scene
  • Re-sharing your blog post content.

If you’ve got more ideas, please share.
