You want to read but the zeal to read is not there. You finally find a book you would love loveeee to reading, but try as you might, you can’t seem to get your mind to put the sentences together or make sense of what’s happening on the page. Everyone keeps saying that book is so good… but you can’t. get. past. the. page. you’re. on!
I feel your pain, I’ve been there before. What you’re experiencing is called a Reading Slump. According to Urban dictionary, reading slumps are readers worst nightmare. It involves not being able to pick up a book and read because you just can’t, you just can’t read. They occur when outside our reading/imaginary world, we’re experiencing stress, changes or uncertainty.
If you really want to get back into reading, and are still experiencing this issue, you can try my favorite tips.
Reread your favourite book.
Sometimes I go back to read the Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams – my favorite book of all time – because it speaks to me on so many levels about love. It is also a short read, that gives me my favorite emotion – happiness.
Ask a book lover for recommendation
In December 2021, I read Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney, which is completely different from my favorite genre-romance. This was because I reached out to one of my favorite bookstagrammer for book recommendations when I was tired from reading romance books on my shelf. Actually, it was one book in particular, it just kept on going on and on and by the time I finished reading it, I didn’t want to pick another romance book.

Experiment and find your niche
Reading Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney opened me to reading another genre/niche I haven’t read in a while which is historical fiction and paranormal books. I went on to reading The Invisible Life of Addie Larue by V. E. Schwab and I must say, reading different genres makes me excited to read and write more.
Three chapter rule.
Personally, I don’t do this because once I pick up a book, no matter how long it takes me, I make sure to complete it. But many people recommend reading the first three chapters of a book and if it doesn’t interest you, drop it and move on to the next.

When you listen to books, or try a different format than you are used to, it gives you a different perspective. Audio is my favorite format right now, because I can close my eyes and imagine. I don’t need to read. Just listen. But still, nothing beats spooning a physical book.
I hope these tips help you out of your reading slump. I’ve read more than two reviews that say my book, First Impressions, got readers out of their reading slumps. *winks*
